💡 TAX TIP: Changed jobs? Check your tax code!
Starting a new job? Don’t assume your tax code is automatically correct ✨
When you change jobs, HMRC uses information about your income and employment to determine the tax code your new employer should use. Sometimes, especially if you’ve recently changed jobs or have more than one source of income, the code may not be what you expect.
🔎 A wrong tax code could mean you’re paying too much or too little tax during the year.
If your circumstances have changed, it’s worth checking your details with HMRC and making sure your employer has the correct information! ...

MYTHS THAT YOU MAY BELIEVE…
💭 “I haven't been paid yet, so I don't need to pay tax on it.”
❌ Not necessarily.
Imagine you invoice a customer £2,000 in March, but they don't pay you until April.
The fact that the £2,000 hasn't hit your bank account doesn't automatically mean it falls into the next tax period.
Your tax treatment can depend on whether you're using cash basis or traditional accounting, along with your individual circumstances.
💡 So before you assume “no cash = no tax”, check which accounting basis applies to you.
Because when it comes to tax, when you get paid isn't always the whole story. ...

📚 Common Bookkeeping Mistakes: Paying Yourself? Here’s What You Need to Know
One of the most common mistakes business owners make is treating paying yourself like a simple transfer of money. 💸
How you pay yourself depends on your business structure — and getting it wrong can create bookkeeping, tax and cash-flow headaches later.
A few things to keep in mind:
✔️ Your business structure matters
✔️ Personal and business finances should be kept separate
✔️ Your bookkeeping should clearly record how money is being taken from the business
The key takeaway? Don’t just transfer money and figure out the bookkeeping later. Make sure you know what the payment represents and how it should be recorded. ...

🚨 A tax bill shouldn’t be a surprise.
One of the simplest ways to make tax season less stressful? Know what’s coming. 💷
Waiting until the deadline to find out how much tax you owe can put unnecessary pressure on your cash flow.
Instead, keep track of your income and expenses throughout the year and regularly review your tax position. That way, you can plan ahead, set money aside, and avoid any surprises. 📊
💡 Tax tip: Don’t just ask, “How much tax do I owe?” — ask, “How much should I be setting aside?” ...

"After many wonderful years of building, growing and being part of something I am incredibly proud of, I have made the decision to take early retirement.
When Peter and I set up the practice, we could only have hoped that it would grow into the successful business it is today. Looking back, I feel incredibly proud of everything we have achieved together, and especially of the wonderful clients, colleagues and relationships that have been such a huge part of the journey.
Walking away from something that has been such a significant part of my life is understandably bittersweet. There have been so many challenges, achievements and memories along the way.
Most importantly, I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported me, trusted me and worked alongside me over the years. It has been a genuine privilege, and I am incredibly grateful for the friendships and relationships I have made.
Here’s to the next chapter🥂"

Tax Tip: Working from home? 🏡💻
If you work from home, you may be able to claim certain costs associated with using your home for work.
Depending on your circumstances, this could include things like household costs, broadband and other expenses related to your work.
But there are specific rules around what you can and can’t claim — so don’t assume everything is automatically allowable!
💡 Our tip: Keep a record of your home-working costs and speak to your accountant to make sure you're claiming everything you're entitled to... ...

Common Bookkeeping Mistakes: Recording Income on the Wrong Date 📅
It’s easy to think, “The money hit my bank today, so I’ll record it today.”
... But that isn’t always the correct date to use✨
Getting your bookkeeping dates wrong can mean:
❌ Income is recorded in the wrong period
❌ Your VAT figures may be affected
❌ Your monthly reports don’t give you an accurate picture
❌ Your cash flow can look misleading
A small date mistake can make a big difference to your accounts.

💭 One Thing We Wish Every Business Owner Knew… Cash flow is key!
Many business owners think that if they're making a profit, everything is running smoothly. But that's not always the case.
A business can be profitable on paper and still struggle to pay suppliers, staff or bills if customer payments are delayed. That's why keeping a close eye on your cash flow is just as important as making sales✨
✅ Top Tip: Don't just monitor your profit—regularly review the money coming into your business and the money going out. Understanding your cash flow can help you plan ahead, avoid surprises and make informed business decisions.

💡 Common Bookkeeping Mistake: Forgetting the Small Expenses
It's easy to remember the big purchases, but what about the smaller day-to-day business costs?
Those coffees with clients, parking charges, postage costs or office supplies may seem insignificant on their own, but they can soon add up. If they're allowable business expenses, recording them could help reduce your tax bill☕
✅ Top Tip: Make it a habit to record every business expense, no matter how small. Keeping on top of your records throughout the year makes bookkeeping easier and helps ensure you don't miss out on valuable claims.
